First and foremost, congratulations on your newest addition! I am so happy for you and your family. And what a time to remember! The first 10 days of your baby’s life are so unique. 10 short days when baby is so completely new and fresh that go by so fast. That’s why Kelowna newborn photography is so important. You won’t get these days back, so please do yourself a favor and make sure that you get professional photos taken of you and your family in this sleepy, amazing and incredible time.

As a mom of 3 young boys myself (two being identical twins!), I cherish the newborn photos that I had taken when they were babies. I love seeing them up on my walls. It takes me back to those first days and all the feelings that came with it. It is my mission to provide gorgeous Kelowna newborn photography to families of all kinds in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Summerland, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos and everywhere in between.

Kelowna Newborn Photography | Lifestyle Newborn

My approach to newborn photography here in the Okanagan is based on connection, real life, and raw authenticity. It has been coined “lifestyle newborn photography”. Rather than relying on props and stiff poses, lifestyle newborn photography focuses on the natural connection of your family. It is a privilege to look back and remember this sweet chapter in life; to let everything stand still for just a moment. Here are some of the benefits of Kelowna lifestyle newborn photography:

You are in the comfort of your own home.

No worrying about packing a diaper bag, your baby wanting to cluster feed right when you’re trying to leave, and attempting to arrive somewhere on time (mission impossible!). I come to your home. While you finish getting ready, feed baby, or have a coffee, I will scout out the best lighting in your home to take the photos. I might even rearrange a little bit- of course, to be put back afterwards!

You don’t have to worry about making the house spotless for me to come. Did I mention that my oldest had just turned 2 when my twin boys were born? Yeah, my house still isn’t spotless! And that’s okay. We almost always shoot by a window in the living room, master bedroom and/ or nursery. We can use as many or as few locations as you’d like. I’ll follow your lead and feelings of the moment.

You’ll get family portraits along with newborn portraits.

A family session is combined with newborn photos. Every family is unique, and I’m here to document it all! What have your days been made up of since bringing baby home? If you’re anything like me, then it has been staring together down at your incredible newborn baby. No matter what your family looks like (pets are welcome, too!), your family has never been so special. Some of the shots I generally try to get include but are not limited to:

  • Both partners admiring baby
  • Each partner alone with baby (shows unique connections)
  • Older sibling with baby (in a safe manner)
  • Older sibling with parents, so child feels included and you get to remember how little they are when their sibling was born, back when they suddenly seemed so ‘big’ in comparison
  • Baby in crib and/ or on master bed
  • Parents admiring baby in crib
  • Lying down in bed together
  • Pictures of baby alone
  • Details of baby (hands, nose, eyes, whispy hairs, toes, etc)
  • An activity (nursing, drinking coffee together, burping baby, etc)
  • Photos of the nursery

Raw, authentic emotion as beautiful art.

You’ll be wearing expressions that you’ve never worn before as you look at your child. I want you to remember the way that his or her head felt in your hand, that newborn smell that’s so sweet, and the proud feeling you have when you look at your partner thinking of all that you accomplished. You’ll get pictures of the excitement your toddler has looking at their new sibling- boundless joy and love, I’m sure! I am here to capture all of those moments and feelings. You’ll thank me later!

Studio newborn photography

I bring my mini studio set up to your home so that you will still get some more ‘posed’ photos of baby alone. I believe this brings a lot of value to my Kelowna newborn photography sessions. My props are simple and elegant, putting all the emphasis on your newborn. I usually set up right on your couch or bed. At this time, you can run and grab a coffee to enjoy while watching how adorable baby looks all curled up and in the most perfect little wraps.

How to Prepare For Your Kelowna Newborn Photography Session

  1. Book in advance. Consider booking my “Maternity | Newborn | Family” special that includes a maternity session, newborn session and a family session at a special price, giving you incredible photography coverage of this special time in your life.
  2. Choose any props you’d like included before baby is born. Do you have any family heirlooms that you’d like included? Perhaps a rattle that you played with as a baby? Do you want to make sure to include a certain outfit or baby blanket? Put it all in a box to have handy for when it’s time for your session.
  3. Lower your expectations. Don’t expect your house to be perfect. Don’t expect to be ready by the time I arrive! It takes me a while to set up, use that time to finish getting ready. Don’t stress! It’s all good! I dedicate 2-3 hours for newborn sessions, though some are faster and some are longer depending on how things go. We go at baby’s pace. I’m not here to rush that.
  4. Choose what you’re going to wear ahead of time. I always recommend choosing neutral, timeless pieces. Avoid neons, logos, bold patterns and baseball caps. A great outfit for mom could be a linen dress or leggings and a cozy sweater. An outfit for dad could be jeans and a neutral henley. I recommend having what you’re going to wear chosen and put in the same box as the props from step 2.
  5. Relax and enjoy the process. I love getting to know more families as I photograph them. I’m totally okay with baby nursing every 5 minutes. You’ll enjoy the experience a lot more if you let it unfold naturally and let me tell your story.
